Consign or sell directly

What is the difference?

What is a consignment?

If your collection is suitable for our auction, it will be picked up by us and brought to our auction house. It will then be neatly sorted, described and numbered by our expert staff. Finally, your consignment will be stored professionally in our secured auction rooms in white boxes until the auction. A small insight into our storage rooms can be found here.

Did no one bid on your lot?

If your collection was not sold at the auction, it will automatically be placed on our highly sought-after return lot list and given another chance to be sold with a high probability.

The direct sale

If your collection is not suitable for the auction or if you would like to sell it directly to us, we are at your disposal. Your collection will be examined and evaluated by our expert staff. You will receive an offer on the spot and if necessary a direct payment.

Rely on experience!

In the past decades we auctioned many of the most important collections ever offered on German soil. The sale of the collections of great philatelists, such as Hans Bothe, Eduard Peschl or the most extensive collection “Danzig coins of post-war history” were among our milestones.

Guide

Suitable material

Suitable are stamp and coin collections of any size and of course good individual pieces. Motif collections, attic finds, basement finds, old slabs, coin boxes, etc. are interesting.

Jewelry and precious stones, porcelain and silver, classic toys and other varia also find many buyers at our auctions.

Not suitable are so-called “children’s collections”, supposed modern varieties or colors “found” after a color guide, lots of cheap plate errors or apparent double image prints. Unfortunately, we have no interest in merely silver-plated modern medals and worthless German silver (copper/nickel/zinc) medals, which were given away en masse by mail-order companies.

Transfer options

If your collection is manageable in terms of quantity and value, we recommend sending it by mail to our parcel address (see imprint). Well packed, a package is insured with DHL/Deutsche Post AG up to a value of € 500,–.

Would you like to have your package conveniently picked up at your home? Then our free DHL/Deutsche Post AG pick-up service is suitable for you. Please inform us in advance by email to kundenservice@hba.de.

Would you like to hand over your values to us personally? Then please make an appointment with our office by phone or email (Monday to Friday) and combine your visit with a tour of our business premises or a shopping trip in the nearby city of Hamburg.

If your collection is more voluminous or particularly valuable, then we recommend our visit service. Our experts travel throughout Germany and our neighboring countries and will also visit you at your place of residence. Please refer to the map of Germany for the visit dates in your region.

Appraisal of your collection

The appraisal of your collection is free of charge and non-binding for you in all cases. This also applies to goods sent to us by mail, which we appraise for you free of charge. In case of return (e.g. because the value is too low) we bear the costs of the return.

Please note that we do not prepare appraisals, e.g. for inheritance disputes. The experts of the chambers of industry and commerce in your region are responsible for this.

Consignment or direct sale

Costs

There is an old saying: What costs nothing is worth nothing. We don’t think much of the blatant offers of some competitors, who suggest a higher revenue through a low commission rate. Compare, form your own opinion and remember, the cheapest offer is not always the best!

For the elaborate presentation and sale of your collection, we receive a competitive commission in line with the market, which includes all other costs. Unlike some competitors, we do not charge our consignors photo costs or lot fees. For the all-risk insurance we charge you only 1.75% of the call price.

Processing your consignment

After the auction contract has been placed, your collection will be looked through by our experts and prepared for the auction. Good individual pieces are offered as single lots. We divide your collection into units that are particularly conducive to sale ourselves, based on decades of experience in the auction business.

You will receive a consignment confirmation about five weeks before the auction, from which you can see the division and the starting prices. On the basis of the lot numbers, you will immediately find your offers in our auction catalog, which you will of course also receive free of charge, or in our online catalog.

The auction

Have you ever attended an auction in person? Take the opportunity and personally follow how your lots are auctioned. You are cordially invited to attend the auction in our own auction room. About eight days after the auction you will receive an auction protocol with the hammer prices of your consignment.

The payout

At the earliest four, at the latest twelve weeks after the conclusion of the auction you will receive your auction settlement. The proceeds will be transferred to your account, paid by check or in cash according to your wishes. If a lot remains unsold, it will usually be offered again in the following auction. We are also happy to make you a takeover offer.

Do you have any additional questions?

Do not hesitate and feel free to contact us!

Please understand that we cannot answer blanket inquiries about values either by email or by phone. For the valuation of a collection or a single piece, the visual inspection is of crucial importance.
